High Fructose Corn Syrup vs. Sugar in Your Soft Drink
There are many kids of sugar found in everyday foods that you eat, the main types being glucose, fructose, and sucrose. Glucose is a naturally occurring sugar in the body that gives us energy. Fructose is naturally derived but is not a natural component in our bodies and does not produce energy. Sucrose is a 50/50 combination of both glucose and fructose. Most commonly added to food is a form of fructose called high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) or Sucrose (table sugar).
Our mouths naturally contain bacteria that feed off of sugars introduced. That bacteria is able to convert the sugars into plaque which is the sticky film that forms on teeth and causes cavities. Both HFCS and sucrose easily can be converted to plaque.
Sodas often contain large amounts of HFCS or sugar for taste. Neither of which is good for your teeth. If you chose a drink that contains high fructose corn syrup or sugar in it, it is best to drink it down, NOT sip on it over time. This allows the pH level in your mouth to recover from the introduction of sugar and to allow your saliva glands to “wash” your teeth!
